A guide to staying in

Our favorite things in hygge season

A cozy, comfortable hygge corner with Habitat

Hygge, the Danish term for a state of contentment – or coziness, by most definitions – had an international moment last year. Everything from food to interiors extolled the virtues of simple things and small pleasures.

Plush and soft surfaces, the sight of wood in natural finishes, an enervating cup of tea on a rainy afternoon. These are but some of the sensations that bring us comfort. Add on to those the warm feelings that tiptoe into Manila as the yuletide season draws near. We are early holiday-makers; especially attuned to the slightest dip in temperatures and mornings when dew stays longer in the air.

Here are some items we personally recommend as part of your own hygge corner at home.

Create your own hygge corner

Upon choosing a perfect spot for your simple sanctuary at home, set it up with furniture and rugs in soft shapes and calm colors. Throw in some of your favorite throws and cushions to make it feel like a luxe nest.

Set the mood with proper lighting and scents

Create a calm atmosphere with mood lighting and warm, soothing scents with your favorite candles and diffusers.

Indulge in a hot drink and your favorite comfort treats

Coffee or tea, with a light indulgent snack, will surely hit the spot. Don’t forget a good book and some relaxing music.

Hygge is a state of mind, but also a guide to meaningful design.
